    Looking better this time
    R with uke looking better

Looking a little bit better this month! I seem to suffer less from stage fright lately, which is great news. I actually managed to look at the audience and concentrate more on entertaining them than on my own internal state. I did "Greensleeves" aka "What Child is This" as a ukulele solo, in the key of Dm. It's really just my usual guitar version (Am on the guitar) and depends very much on having a low G string. I am thinking of going to a high G string, as this is more uke-like - and hey, Jake does it that way.

I think my improvement regarding stage fright is simply due to playing more in front of people.

Me at Folklife 2005 Niels, Susan & Richard at NW Folklife 2005
Here I am playing on the stage of the Intiman Theater at NW Folklife 2005. I'm playing with 70 or 80 other ukulele players from SUPA. I have hat hair! In the picture on the right, Niels and I are wearing our silly hats, which Susan had the sense to avoid, it would seem. The rest of the pictures (taken by Pam's husband) are here.

    Strangle that uke!
    Richard Gillmann playing ukulele
Arggh! This month I look really grim. And Susan is playing rhythm somewhere off to the side. So I'm not making much progress on the looking-good-while-performing front, but the song went well - my original arrangement of Stardust.

    Playing a solo at SUPA
This month I played a solo piece at the SUPA open mike. It went well, but from this picture it doesn't look like I was having much fun. My stage fright wasn't too bad, but next time I must try to look a little more cheerful!

    Playing an open mic
    SUPA performance, December 2004

I played a ukulele duet with my friend Susan Howell this month at the SUPA meeting. We played "How Could Red Riding Hood (Have Been So Very Good and Still Keep the Wolf From the Door)," a song from the 1920s. It went pretty well, but we sat too far apart! We just sat where the mikes were instead of moving them. Live and learn!

    Goose poop
    Goose fence

Here's my solution to the goose poop problem: a low (1 foot), flimsy fence between the beach and the lawn. Prime stomping grounds for a Canada goose are water and grass separated by a short, easy walk, plus a nice pier to rest on where they can jump into the water quickly if a dog comes along. That described our backyard last year and we had tons of goose poop (not that much of a hyperbole). This little fence, which they can easily walk over (and sometimes do), is just enough of an annoyance to the geese that they mostly choose other places to hang out. Total cost: less than $20.

    Seattle Dulcimer
I created a web site for my friend Susan Howell. Here is the URL: http://seattledulcimer.com I started with a simple FrontPage template and made a few tweaks. It's simple but it does the job. She teaches the mountain dulcimer, sometimes known as the Appalachian Dulcimer, in Seattle.

    Hey hey
Well I finally got a Livejournal account, as you can see. I don't know how much I'll be posting here, but it will be good to have an account so I can at least make non-anonymous comments on other LJs that I read.
